Hydrangea macrophylla 'Royalty Collection' Lady Mata Hari Blue 3.5L pot Mophead variety

An exciting variety from the innovative Royalty Collection, 'Lady Mata Hari Blue' produces mophead blooms made up of clusters of multi-tonal flowers, creating a breath-taking kaleidoscope effect. Each individual flower blends from mauve-blue through creamy-white to apple-green, so no two blooms are ever quite the same. This compact, deciduous shrub makes a showy patio plant, delivering a mesmerising display throughout summer, while its foliage turns rich red and gold in autumn. As the flower heads fade, they form delicate skeletal silhouettes that carry interest well into winter.

Reaching around 120cm in height and spread, it's ideally suited to containers and lightly shaded borders. Grow in a sunny or semi-shaded position, sheltered from cold, drying winds, in rich, fertile, moist soil improved with plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost. As with other hydrangea cultivars, colour tones vary depending on soil pH — the blue shades may also take on a pinkish hue as they fade through autumn, or shift if alkaline tap water or soil is used.

Water regularly until established, leave faded flower heads in place over winter to protect the developing buds from frost, and prune after flowering to control size and improve shape, finishing with a mulch of well-rotted manure or compost around the base.
