Hebe ‘Blue Star’ is a compact, cool-toned evergreen that looks good all year. It forms a dense, rounded mound of striking blue-grey foliage. From summer into autumn it’s smothered in white flowers, which fade to a soft creamy pink as they age and give a pretty two-tone effect. The flowers are a magnet for bees and butterflies, and ‘Blue Star’ holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its reliable garden performance.
Growing to around 40cm tall and wide, ‘Blue Star’ is well suited to patio pots, window boxes, rockeries and the front of a border. Its silvery-blue leaves set off pinks, purples and deep greens beautifully. Plant in full sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained soil, ideally out of cold, drying winds. It copes with most soil types, including chalk and clay, as long as it doesn’t sit wet over winter. Water regularly through its first season, after which it tolerates dry spells well. It is hardy through most of the UK, but a layer of mulch and some fleece during the hardest frosts will help it through a severe winter. Deadheading keeps it flowering for longer. Trim lightly after flowering to keep a neat shape, and remove any frost-damaged shoots in late spring.
