Hamamelis × intermedia 'Rubin'
One of the finest red-flowered witch hazels and a holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, Hamamelis × intermedia 'Rubin' produces slightly scented, ruby-red flowers on its bare branches through late winter and into early spring. Each flower is made up of four narrow, curled and crimped, ribbon-like petals emerging from a dark red calyx, creating an almost tassel-like effect that stands out beautifully against a grey winter landscape or a fall of snow, with a pleasant spicy, citrus fragrance. Broadly oval, wrinkled green leaves follow, turning attractive shades of yellow and orange in autumn for a second season of interest.
An upright, vase-shaped deciduous shrub or small tree, 'Rubin' typically reaches around 4m in height and spread at maturity, making it a superb focal point for larger borders, woodland gardens, or as a solitary specimen. It grows well in full sun or partial shade, in moist but well-drained soil of most types, though it will tolerate deep, humus-rich soils over chalk. Young plants may need some protection from severe late spring frosts once the new leaves emerge.
Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch.
