Hakonechloa macra 'Allgold' (Golden Japanese Forest Grass)
A truly radiant ornamental grass, and one of the best plants for lighting up a shady corner. Its slender, arching leaves are a rich, solid gold, glowing brighter with more sun and taking on a softer, chartreuse tone in deeper shade. Come autumn, the foliage develops an attractive pinkish blush before fading to warm tan for winter interest, and airy sprays of delicate green-yellow flowers appear from summer into early autumn.
Deciduous and clump-forming, 'Allgold' has a graceful, cascading habit that makes it superb for softening the edges of paths, spilling over the front of a border, tumbling down slopes or walls, or growing in containers. It spreads slowly by rhizome without ever becoming invasive, and is happy in sun or shade, making it a genuinely versatile addition to the garden. Non-toxic to pets, it's a safe choice for gardens shared with cats and dogs.
Grow in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil in full sun to full shade — leaf colour tends to be richer and longer-lasting out of the harshest midday sun. A light mulch of well-rotted compost after cutting back in late winter or early spring helps feed the new season's growth, and leaving the flower heads to dry over winter adds valuable texture to the border. Reaching a neat 20–30cm in height with a spread of 30–40cm, and fully hardy throughout the UK, it's a low-maintenance, long-lived choice for shaded planting schemes.
