Gleditsia triacanthos f. inermis 'Sunburst' – Golden Honey Locust – 12 Litre Pot

'Sunburst' is one of the brightest trees you can grow, bringing a glow of colour to the garden from the moment its leaves unfurl. The delicate, finely divided foliage emerges a vivid golden-yellow in spring, softening to lime and pale green through summer before turning a warm butter-yellow again in autumn. Its feathery leaves cast only a light, dappled shade, so lawns and underplanting continue to thrive beneath it, and as a thornless form it is a safe and comfortable choice for family gardens.

This is a tough, adaptable tree, fully hardy (RHS H6) and happy in chalk, clay, loam or sand, whether acid, neutral or alkaline, provided drainage is good. Plant it in full sun to get the richest golden colour; it copes with both exposed and sheltered sites and tolerates urban pollution well, making it equally at home in a town garden or a country plot. It forms an attractive rounded crown with little need for pruning beyond removing any damaged or crossing branches in late autumn or winter. Occasionally gall midge can distort a few leaves, but this is cosmetic and rarely affects the tree's health.

Plant between autumn and early spring, incorporating well-rotted organic matter into the planting hole, and stake firmly for the first few years. Water regularly through the first growing season while the roots establish. Growth is fast when young, and in time it will reach 8–12m in height with a spread of 4–8m.
