Gaura lindheimeri 2L

Few perennials flower as generously or as gracefully as gaura. From late spring right through to early autumn, slender, wiry stems carry a seemingly endless succession of white, star-shaped flowers opening from pink-tinged buds, each with long, delicate stamens that give the impression of butterflies dancing above the border. Holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit and a favourite with bees and other pollinators, it brings movement and a light, airy feel to any sunny planting.

Gaura is happiest in full sun in a south- or west-facing spot, in moderately fertile, well-drained soil; chalk, loam and sandy soils all suit it well. Once established it copes admirably with dry spells, making it ideal for gravel gardens, prairie-style schemes, cottage borders and among ornamental grasses. Avoid heavy, waterlogged ground, particularly over winter. Cut plants back to around 15cm in early spring and divide congested clumps every three to four years to keep them vigorous. A dry mulch in late autumn gives extra protection in colder areas.
