Gaultheria procumbens 'Big Berry' 10cm pot

A low, creeping evergreen prized for its glossy, dark green foliage and generous show of bright red berries that persist right through the winter months. 'Big Berry' has been selected for its larger-than-average fruit, making an even bolder display than the species against the neat, leathery leaves — crush one and you'll catch the plant's characteristic wintergreen scent.

Spreading gently by underground rhizomes to form a dense, weed-suppressing mat, it reaches around 10-15cm in height with an eventual spread of 30-40cm, making it ideal groundcover for a shady border, woodland planting, or acid-soil container display. It prefers humus-rich, moist but well-drained, ericaceous (acidic) soil in partial shade, and is fully hardy, needing no winter protection. Small white, bell-shaped flowers appear in summer, followed by the berries that give the plant its winter appeal.
