Gage (Prunus) Oullins Golden 12L

Oullins Golden is a handsome French gage and a holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, valued for its reliable crops and generous, golden fruit. White spring blossom opens relatively late, which helps it escape spring frosts and makes it a welcome source of nectar for bees. In mid-August it produces large, round, golden-yellow gages with sweet, juicy flesh. They're delicious eaten fresh from the tree, and their firm texture also makes them excellent for cooking, tarts, jams and bottling, so it's a genuinely dual-purpose variety.

Oullins Golden is self-fertile, so a single tree will crop on its own. It is also a reliable pollination partner for other plums and gages, including Old Greengage and Cambridge Gage. It forms a vigorous, upright tree. Plant in full sun in a sheltered spot, in fertile, moist but well-drained soil, and for the sweetest fruit, give it as much warmth as possible or fan-train it against a sunny wall. Water well during dry spells while the tree establishes, and thin the fruit in heavy years for better size and flavour. Pick promptly as it ripens, as wasps and birds love it too. Prune only in summer to reduce the risk of silver leaf and bacterial canker. Hardy. The fruit is delicious, but the stones and leaves shouldn't be eaten, so keep those out of reach of children and pets.
