Fagus sylvatica (Atropurpurea Group) 'Riversii' (12L Pot)

Widely regarded as having the deepest purple foliage of any purple-leaved beech, 'Riversii' is a large, broad-crowned tree grown for its exceptional colour depth — new leaves emerge maroon with mahogany tones in spring, deepening to a rich purple-burgundy through summer that can appear almost black from a distance, before shifting to dark bronze and copper tones in autumn.

Inconspicuous flowers appear in spring, followed by typical bristly beech fruits in autumn. The larger-than-average leaves, with their prominent ribbing and glossy, leathery texture, give the whole canopy a substantial, statuesque presence — a genuine specimen tree for those with the space to let it shine.

Tolerant of a wide range of soils including chalk, clay, loam and sand, it thrives in full sun or partial shade, with full sun bringing out the richest, darkest colour, and appreciates consistently moist, well-drained ground. Given time it will grow into a truly majestic specimen, eventually exceeding 12m in height with a spread wider than 8m, making it best suited to larger gardens, parkland, or estate planting where it can be fully appreciated as a woodland or avenue tree.
