Fagus sylvatica f. purpurea (Copper Beech) (12L Pot)

Also known as the copper beech, this striking purple-leaved form of our native beech is a large, vigorous deciduous tree grown for its deep, dramatic foliage — leaves emerge a rich purple in spring, deepening through summer before turning a warm reddish-copper in autumn. It forms the same broad, spreading crown as the common beech, but with a far more dramatic year-round presence, making it a real focal point in any landscape large enough to accommodate it.

Small, inconspicuous flowers appear in early spring, followed by typical bristly beech fruits (nuts) in autumn, which are a valuable food source for squirrels and birds.

Tolerant of a wide range of soils including chalk, clay, loam and sand, it thrives in full sun or partial shade — full sun brings out the richest purple colour. Given time it will grow into a substantial specimen, eventually exceeding 12m in height with a spread wider than 8m, making it best suited to larger gardens, parkland, or as a magnificent stand-alone specimen tree, and it also makes an outstanding, richly coloured hedge or screen when clipped.
