Fagus sylvatica 'Pendula' (12L Pot)

The classic weeping beech, 'Pendula' is a magnificent, long-lived specimen tree grown for its dramatic sculptural form — undulating main branches sweep upwards and outwards before draping long, pendulous side-branches down towards the ground, sometimes almost touching it. Given age, it forms either a broad, tent-like crown or a more upright silhouette with steeply cascading limbs, no two specimens ever growing quite alike. The glossy, elliptic mid-green leaves turn a rich golden-brown in autumn. This variety holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Inconspicuous flower catkins appear in spring, followed by typical bristly beech fruits in autumn. The smooth grey bark and undulating branch structure provide striking winter interest once the leaves have fallen.

Tolerant of a wide range of soils including chalk, clay, loam and sand, it thrives in full sun or partial shade, and grows best where it won't be exposed to pollution such as road salt. Growth is slow to begin with, gathering pace as the tree matures — given time it will eventually exceed 12m in height with a spread that can be equally wide or more, so it's best planted somewhere it has plenty of room to develop its full, characterful shape, whether as a specimen on the lawn or an architectural centrepiece in a larger garden.
