Eucalyptus gunnii (7L Pot)

Known as the cider gum — named for the alcoholic drink once fermented from its sap — Eucalyptus gunnii is one of the best-known hardy eucalypts grown in the UK, a fast-growing evergreen prized for its striking, ever-changing bark and foliage. The attractively peeling grey bark reveals patches of yellowish-brown that weather beautifully to soft pink and green tones over time, while rounded, silvery-blue juvenile leaves — much loved by flower arrangers — give way to longer, sickle-shaped grey-green foliage on more mature growth. Small, fragrant white flowers appear in mid- to late summer. This variety holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Left unpruned it will grow into a substantial tree, but it's commonly kept as a large shrub through regular hard pruning, which also encourages the plant to retain its more ornamental rounded juvenile leaves — an approach many gardeners prefer for smaller spaces or as an eye-catching feature.

Fast-growing and undemanding, it thrives in full sun in any light, well-drained soil, ideally acid to neutral, and appreciates a sheltered spot while establishing. Left to grow naturally it can eventually reach well over 12m, though regular pruning will comfortably keep it to a more manageable size and shape for most gardens.
