Erica arborea 'Albert's Gold' 12cm pot

Erica arborea 'Albert's Gold'

A vigorous, upright evergreen shrub grown chiefly for its glowing golden-yellow foliage, which stays bright through the year and is at its most vivid in winter and spring. Fine, needle-like leaves create a striking backdrop in the border, and occasionally, tall panicles of tiny, honey-scented white flowers appear in spring, though sparingly — the real draw here is the year-round colour rather than the blooms. An RHS Award of Garden Merit winner, and a superb choice for adding warmth to a mixed border or informal hedge.

Reliably hardy and happy in exposed or coastal positions, 'Albert's Gold' needs full sun and well-drained, acidic to neutral soil to thrive. It forms an upright, bushy shrub reaching 1.5–2.5m in height with a narrower 50cm–1m spread over 10–20 years, making it a useful vertical accent without taking up too much lateral space. Trim lightly in mid-spring to keep it neat and symmetrical, and avoid overwatering, as it dislikes sitting wet.
