Enkianthus campanulatus (12L Pot)

Known as the redvein enkianthus, this large, elegantly upright deciduous shrub offers two distinct seasons of real garden interest. From mid-spring to early summer, delicate clusters of small, cream, bell-shaped flowers — often flushed with red veining — dangle gracefully from the branches, followed by an outstanding autumn display as the small elliptic leaves turn brilliant shades of red, orange and yellow. This variety holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Slow-growing and naturally low-maintenance, it's an ideal choice for woodland planting or a shady border, and works beautifully as a specimen, planted in groups for impact, or even trained as an informal hedge.

Best suited to a sheltered position, it needs moist but well-drained, humus-rich, acid to neutral soil in full sun or partial shade — the same conditions that suit azaleas and rhododendrons — and tolerates clay, loam and sandy soils. Given its slow, steady growth, it can take many years to reach its eventual height and spread of around 2.5–4m, making it a long-term investment that rewards patience with real seasonal spectacle.
