Dryopteris wallichiana, also known as Wallich's wood fern, is one of the most striking ferns for a shady garden and holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit. In spring its fronds unfurl a bright yellowish-green, rising in a shuttlecock shape from stems thickly covered in dark brown to black scales. Against the fresh foliage these scales give the plant a dramatic, almost architectural look. Originally from the Himalayas, it is tough and reliable and looks its best in a woodland garden, under deciduous trees or in a shady corner by the house.

Mature plants reach a height of up to 90cm, though it can take five to ten years to get there. It grows best in light to full shade in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Once established it copes with drier shade than many ferns. A yearly mulch of garden compost or leaf mould in the first few years helps it settle in. It is semi-evergreen to deciduous, depending on how cold the winter is, and looks particularly good with hostas, hellebores and other shade-lovers.

Care is minimal. Cut away last year's tired fronds in late winter or early spring, before the new crosiers start to unfurl, and water during long dry spells while the plant establishes.

Supplied in a 3 litre pot, ready to plant out. Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch.
