Diosma hirsuta 'Sunset Gold'
A vibrant little shrub that punches well above its size. Also known as Golden Breath of Heaven, 'Sunset Gold' forms a dense, neat mound of fine, needle-like foliage in a striking bright golden-yellow, deepening in richness through summer and autumn in full sun. From late winter into spring, it's covered in small white flowers that fade to pale pink as the season progresses — and true to one of its nicknames, "the fisherman's plant," the foliage releases a fresh, citrussy fragrance at the slightest touch.
Compact and slow-growing, 'Sunset Gold' reaches only around 40cm in height with a slightly wider 50cm spread at maturity, making it ideal for the front of a border, a rockery, or a container on a sunny patio or terrace. It needs full sun and free-draining, sandy or poor soil to thrive, disliking wet roots, and copes well with drought once established. Only half-hardy down to around -5°C, so a sheltered position is important, and in cooler gardens it's best grown in a pot that can be moved under cover for winter. Trim lightly after flowering to keep its compact, rounded shape.
