A striking, tactile conifer, Cryptomeria japonica 'Elegans' forms a broadly columnar, upright evergreen with distinctive tiered branches clothed in soft, feathery, juvenile foliage that never hardens into stiff adult needles — irresistible to touch and a genuine talking point in the garden. The blue-green foliage puts on a real seasonal show, deepening to rich purple with hints of red and orange through autumn and winter, before returning to fresh blue-green in spring.

Cryptomeria has notably weak, shallow roots, so it's best given a sheltered spot away from strong winds, in any moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade — it tolerates chalk, clay, loam and sand alike. Reaching an eventual height of 4–8m with a much narrower spread of just 1–1.5m, its slender, columnar habit makes it a superb specimen for a smaller garden, courtyard, or as a striking vertical accent among lower planting. No routine pruning is required.
