Crataegus x lavalleei 'Carrierei' 12ltr pot

Crataegus × lavalleei 'Carrierei' (12L Pot)

An outstanding hybrid hawthorn and holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, 'Carrierei' forms a compact, elegant small tree with a dense, broad, rounded crown — a real all-rounder for gardens of any size. Its glossy, leathery oval leaves are semi-evergreen, often clinging on well into winter, and put on a fine display of red, orange and bronze tones in late autumn before finally falling.

In late spring, fragrant white flowers appear in dense clusters, attracting pollinators, followed by an impressive show of large, bright orange-red haws that persist right through autumn and deep into winter, offering colour when little else is happening in the garden as well as a valuable food source for birds. Unlike many hawthorns, this variety carries only sparse thorns, making it easier to work around.

Tough and reliably undemanding, it copes well with coastal, exposed, urban and polluted sites, and tolerates a wide range of soils including chalk, clay, loam and sand in full sun or partial shade. Given time it will reach around 4–8m in height with a spread that can exceed 8m, making it an excellent specimen or feature tree for gardens both large and more compact.

Supplied as a well-established plant in a 12-litre pot, ready to plant out and establish quickly.
