Crataegus × dippeliana (12L Pot)

An elegant and free-flowering hawthorn hybrid, Crataegus × dippeliana forms a small tree with a dense, twiggy head of twisted, thorny branches. The shallowly lobed, dark green leaves are attractive throughout the season, gradually paling with age as summer progresses.

In early summer, it puts on a spectacular display of white flowers up to 2.5cm across, produced in such abundance that the whole tree can appear smothered in blossom — a magnet for pollinators. These are followed in early autumn by light orange-red fruits, adding further seasonal interest and providing food for garden birds.

Robust and adaptable, it grows well in a wide range of soils including chalk, clay, loam and sand, and thrives in full sun or partial shade, tolerating both exposed and sheltered positions. Given time, it will reach an eventual height and spread of around 4–8m, making it a lovely choice as a specimen tree, in a wildlife garden, or as part of an informal mixed boundary.
