Crataegus laevigata 'Crimson Cloud' (12L Pot)

One of the most eye-catching of all ornamental hawthorns, 'Crimson Cloud' is a small, thorny deciduous tree valued above all for its striking blossom — single flowers with bold crimson-pink petals surrounding a snow-white centre, smothering the branches from May to June and carrying a rich, popular-with-bees fragrance. The glossy green, deeply lobed foliage provides a lovely backdrop for the flowers before turning attractive bronze and golden tones in autumn.

Dark red haws follow the flowers, produced in abundance and providing a valuable source of food for garden birds such as yellowhammers and thrushes well into autumn and winter — the thorny branches also make excellent nesting sites. This variety holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit and is recognised as an RHS Plants for Pollinators selection.

Wonderfully tough and hardy, it tolerates a wide range of soils including chalk, clay, loam and sand, and copes well with exposed, coastal, polluted and even damp sites, thriving in full sun or partial shade. Given time it reaches an eventual height and spread of around 4–8m, making it a superb specimen tree for a wildlife garden, informal border, or as an accent tree bringing colour in both spring and autumn.
