Cotoneaster hybridus 'Pendulus' (12L Pot)

A delightful weeping evergreen, Cotoneaster hybridus 'Pendulus' is naturally a prostrate, ground-hugging shrub, but is almost always top-grafted onto a standard stem to create a charming small tree with long, cascading branches that arch down towards the ground in a graceful dome. The glossy, dark green elliptic leaves provide a handsome backdrop for masses of small white flowers in June, much loved by bees, followed by clusters of bright red berries that persist through autumn and well into winter, offering a valuable food source for garden birds including waxwings.

As with other cotoneasters, the ornamental berries are not for eating, so it's worth siting away from areas where young children or pets might be tempted to sample them.

Reliably hardy and wonderfully unfussy, it tolerates a wide range of soils — chalk, clay, loam and sand — and copes well with exposed sites, thriving best in full sun. Forming a neat small tree of around 1.5–2.5m in height and spread over time, it's ideal as a specimen for smaller gardens, on banks and slopes, or even grown successfully in a large container on the patio.
