The flowering dogwood is one of the most celebrated small trees for spring display, prized for its conspicuous white or pink bracts that surround the true, tiny green flowers in late spring — from a distance, the whole tree appears smothered in bloom. Broadly oval, mid-green leaves follow through summer, turning a rich red and purple in autumn, when rounded orange-red fruit also appears, adding a final season of interest before leaf fall.

Best in full sun or partial shade, in moist but well-drained, acid to neutral soil — mulching to keep the roots cool in summer helps it perform at its best, and a sheltered spot is worthwhile in exposed gardens. Expect an eventual height and spread of 4–8m, reached over 20–50 years, making it a graceful, long-term specimen for a garden with a little more space to give.
