Cornelian Cherry (Cornus) mas Jolico 12L

Few plants bring cheer to the garden as early as the Cornelian cherry, and Jolico is one of the finest fruiting forms. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit. In late winter, often as early as February, its bare branches are smothered in clusters of tiny golden-yellow flowers, providing a welcome early feast for bees. By late summer these have given way to glossy, cherry-red fruits up to three times the size of the ordinary species. Rich in vitamin C, with a tangy flavour reminiscent of sour cherry and cranberry, they make excellent jams, jellies, syrups and cordials. Leave them on the branch until fully ripe and soft, when they're at their sweetest. Birds and wildlife will enjoy any you don't gather.

Despite its name, Jolico belongs to the dogwood family rather than the cherry family. It grows slowly into a bushy large shrub or small tree of up to around 5m, and makes a lovely specimen, informal hedge or addition to an edible or wildlife garden. It is exceptionally easy-going, happy in sun or partial shade, on almost any well-drained soil from clay to chalk, and tolerant of exposed positions. Pruning is rarely needed beyond tidying dead or crossing branches. For the heaviest crops, plant another Cornus mas nearby for cross-pollination. Fully hardy (RHS H6). The ripe fruit is edible, but the hard stones should be discarded rather than eaten.
