Larger and more robust in every way than the common snowdrop, Galanthus elwesii — known as the giant snowdrop — produces broader, blue-green foliage and generously sized, honey-scented white flowers, each inner tepal marked with a bold green blotch. Native to the Balkans and western Turkey, it copes better with warmer, drier summers than many other snowdrop species, making it a particularly dependable choice for British gardens. Plant in drifts beneath trees or along borders for an unmistakable show of late-winter colour.

Reaching around 20-25cm in height, Galanthus elwesii is best planted in early autumn, 10cm deep, in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil in full sun or partial shade. It naturalises readily by both self-seeding and bulb offsets, gradually building into generous colonies over the years, and tolerates the dry summer shade found beneath deciduous trees particularly well.
