Clematis Amethyst Beauty 3ltr

Bred by Raymond Evison, Clematis 'Amethyst Beauty' is an extremely floriferous, late large-flowered variety that produces wavy-margined, star-shaped blooms from top to bottom of the plant. The flowers open a rich reddish-purple before maturing to a striking purple-blue, creating a lovely gradient of colour as they age.

Unusually, 'Amethyst Beauty' begins flowering low down - often as little as 45-50cm from soil level - and continues right through to its final height of around 1.5-2m, giving generous colour from June into September. Its foliage is naturally a little sparse, so it's well suited to growing through roses, shrubs or other clematis for a fuller display, and is equally at home in a container with an obelisk for support.

Plant in moisture-retentive, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade, with the crown 5-8cm deep to encourage new shoots from below ground level. Keep the roots cool and shaded with underplanting or a layer of pebbles at the base - clematis prefer their "heads in the sun and feet in the shade." Falls into Pruning Group 2, needing a light prune in late winter or early spring, and again after the first flush of flowers in summer. As with all clematis, the foliage and stems can be a skin irritant and are harmful if eaten, so it's best sited away from grazing pets and gloves are recommended when handling.
