Choisya ternata

A firm favourite for good reason. This rounded, bushy evergreen shrub bears glossy, dark green leaves divided into three broad leaflets, releasing a distinctive citrus scent when brushed or crushed. Clusters of pure white, star-shaped flowers appear from late spring, filling the air with a lovely orange-blossom fragrance, and often flowering again fitfully into autumn and even winter — a real bonus for late-season interest. An RHS Award of Garden Merit winner, it's also a magnet for bees and butterflies.

Easy-going and low-maintenance, Choisya ternata is happy in most well-drained soils and prefers a sheltered spot in full sun, where it will flower most freely. It's reliably hardy and tolerates drought well once established. Left to its own devices it forms a substantial, rounded shrub reaching 1.5–2.5m in height and spread over 10–20 years, making it equally suited to mixed borders, containers, or informal hedging. Prune lightly after flowering to keep a neat shape, or harder if it's outgrown its space — it responds well.
