Cercis chinensis 'Avondale' — 12L Pot

A compact, RHS Award of Garden Merit-winning Chinese redbud, ideally suited to smaller gardens or large containers. In late spring, densely-clustered, dark purple-pink pea-like flowers smother the bare stems before any leaves appear, giving a spectacular early show. The relatively large, heart-shaped leaves follow, tinted red-purple as they unfurl before maturing to rich glossy green through summer, then fading to buttery yellow ahead of autumn leaf drop.

Best in a sheltered, south- or west-facing spot in full sun or partial shade, in moist but well-drained soil — it copes with most soil types including chalk, clay, loam and sand. Slow-growing and genuinely compact, it reaches just 2.5–4m in height with a spread of 1.5–2.5m over 10–20 years, making it a real talking point in a space too small for most other flowering trees.
