Ceanothus arboreus 'Trewithen Blue' — 12L Pot

A magnificent, vigorous Californian lilac bred right here in Cornwall, at Trewithen Garden, just down the road from us. Graceful, arching branches carry glossy, dark green oval leaves year-round, before being smothered in spring and early summer by abundant, fragrant mid-blue flower panicles up to 12cm long — a display that's hard to match for sheer volume of colour, and one that draws early bees and butterflies in droves. It can be grown as a free-standing large shrub or small tree, or trained flat against a warm wall, where its less-than-fully-hardy nature is best protected.

Best in full sun, in a sheltered spot away from cold winds — it copes well with coastal exposure and salt air, making it a natural fit for Cornish gardens, but any well-drained soil suits it. Expect an eventual height and spread of 4–8m, reached within just 5–10 years, so it fills space quickly once established. Holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
