Carpinus betulus 'Frans Fontaine' — 12L Pot
A hornbeam bred for exactly this kind of job: a narrow, columnar tree that keeps its neat, upright form as it matures, making it ideal for smaller gardens, avenues, or tight urban spaces where a spreading tree won't fit. Smooth grey bark darkens with age, while fresh green leaves in spring and summer turn a rich golden-yellow come autumn — and often hang on through winter as dried brown foliage before finally dropping in spring, giving useful screening even in the colder months. This cultivar bears only male catkins, appearing green in April.
Easy to establish and tolerant of most soils and situations, including both dry and wet ground, it grows well in full sun or partial shade. Expect an eventual height of 8–12m with a notably narrow spread of just 2.5–4m, reached over 10–20 years — considerably quicker to size than many trees of comparable height.
Each tree is hand-selected before dispatch.
