Carex testacea 'Prairie Fire' 3tr

A dense, tufted, evergreen grass valued for its year-round colour, with narrow, olive-green leaves tipped in bright orange that deepen to a rich orange-bronze through autumn and winter — a real highlight when much of the garden has gone quiet. Brown flower spikes appear in summer but are largely inconspicuous. Forms a graceful arching mound to around 50cm in height and spread, and works well in gravel gardens, border edges, or cascading from containers.

Care: Grow in any moist but well-drained soil, in full sun for the best colour, though it tolerates partial shade. Rake out dead leaves in early spring; if needed, the clump can be cut back by half between April and July to keep it tidy.
