Carex oshimensis 'Everillo' 5L

Few evergreen grasses bring as much brightness to the garden as Carex 'Everillo'. Its slender, gently weeping leaves emerge a vivid lime-green and deepen to rich golden-yellow as the season goes on, forming a loose, cascading mound that glows in shade and keeps its colour right through winter. Part of the EverColor series, it is excellent spilling over the edge of a pot, edging a path or raised bed, or lighting up a shady border alongside ferns and dark-leaved hostas.

'Everillo' reaches a height and spread of up to 50cm over two to five years. It grows in sun or partial shade, but the foliage colour is richest in light shade, and very hot, dry spots can scorch the leaves. It prefers moist but well-drained soil, and once established it copes with dry spells better than many sedges. Small brown flower spikes appear in early summer, though the foliage is the main attraction.

It needs very little care. In spring, comb out any tired or brown leaves with your fingers rather than cutting the plant back hard. Water container plants during dry weather, and lift and divide larger clumps in spring if you want more plants.
