Carex comans 'Frosted Curls'

Native to New Zealand, Carex comans 'Frosted Curls' is an evergreen sedge grown for its distinctive, mop-headed clumps of very slender, shimmering silvery-green foliage, with fine leaves curling delicately at their tips for a soft, frosted appearance. Insignificant green flower spikes appear in summer, but this is very much a foliage plant, offering year-round interest and texture rather than a floral display.

A compact variety, 'Frosted Curls' typically reaches around 30–60cm in height with a spread of up to 45cm, making it well suited to the front of borders, containers, winter pots, or cascading over walls and slopes, where its curling habit can be shown to full effect. It performs best in full sun, where the foliage develops its most vivid silvery sheen, though it also tolerates partial shade. Grow in moist but well-drained, fertile soil, avoiding heavy, waterlogged conditions in winter. Low maintenance, it needs no cutting back in the traditional sense; simply comb through with your fingers in late winter or early spring to remove dead or tatty foliage, and divide congested clumps to maintain vigour.
