Canna Cannova Red 3ltr

A compact, tender perennial with a real tropical presence, grown as much for its bold, paddle-shaped foliage as for its exotic, richly coloured flowers. 'Cannova Red' produces striking pale red blooms over an unusually long season, from summer right through into autumn, held above lush green leaves that give borders and containers an instant sub-tropical feel. It's an RHS Award of Garden Merit holder, reflecting its reliable garden performance, and its compact, clump-forming habit makes it a good choice even for smaller spaces where a full-sized canna might overwhelm.

Reaching around 50–100cm in height with a more modest spread, 'Cannova Red' does best in full sun, in moist but well-drained, loam or sandy soil, and appreciates a sheltered spot — a south- or west-facing position suits it well. Grow it as a patio plant in pots of peat-free compost, or plant it directly into a sunny border. Water freely through the growing season and feed with a high-potassium fertiliser every two to three weeks to keep flowering going strong; deadhead spent flower stalks regularly to encourage further blooms. It isn't reliably hardy over a UK winter, so once frost blackens the foliage in autumn, lift the rhizomes and store them in barely moist compost somewhere frost-free until spring. Keep an eye out for slugs, snails and glasshouse red spider mite, which can occasionally trouble it.
