A rare and elegant find for the discerning garden, Betula pendula 'Dalecarlica' — the Swedish birch — takes the classic silver birch and adds an extra layer of grace. Diamond-shaped leaves are deeply cut into fine, feathery lobes, giving the whole canopy a delicate, lacy texture quite unlike the ordinary species, while slender branches weep attractively at the tips. The familiar peeling white bark darkens and roughens at the base with age, and yellow-brown catkins open in early spring before the foliage turns a clear yellow in autumn.

A large, striking deciduous tree, this rarely seen cultivar makes a genuine talking point as a specimen where its finely cut foliage and pendulous habit can be fully appreciated — best given the space to develop its naturally graceful, slightly narrower crown.

Grow in full sun or partial shade, in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil. It's fully hardy (RHS H7), copes with both exposed and sheltered sites, and needs only minimal pruning once established, best carried out between late summer and midwinter to avoid heavy sap "bleeding."
