Betula pendula 'Youngii' — Young's Weeping Birch — 12Ltr Pot

Holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, Betula pendula 'Youngii' is one of the best-loved weeping birches for smaller gardens, forming a neat, dome-shaped crown of slender, arching branches that cascade right down to the ground — a naturally striking shape that needs little training to look its best. Small, heart-shaped, fresh green leaves turn yellow in autumn, while the white, peeling bark develops attractive dark fissures with age. It rarely flowers or fruits, keeping the focus firmly on form and foliage.

A compact, slow-growing tree, 'Youngii' is a better choice than the larger 'Tristis' for a smaller plot, and its dense, cascading canopy makes a wonderful natural den for children as well as an elegant specimen for a lawn or border.

Grow in full sun or partial shade, in any reasonably well-drained soil — this variety tolerates chalk, clay, loam and sand, and copes well with exposure. It's fully hardy (RHS H7) and needs only minimal pruning once established, best carried out between late summer and midwinter to avoid heavy sap "bleeding."

Each tree is hand-selected before dispatch, supplied in a 12-litre pot ready for planting straight into its final position.
