A strong, easy-growing selection of Erman's birch, Betula ermanii 'Polar Bear' develops its brilliant white bark on the branches from an early age, giving a bright, luminous quality to the tree even while it's still young. Dark green leaves cover the branches through spring and summer before turning a clean yellow in autumn, with yellow-brown catkins adding further interest in spring.

A large, vigorous, bushy tree, 'Polar Bear' is best suited to larger gardens or open spaces where its eventual size and spreading crown can be given room to develop — a good choice for anyone wanting striking winter bark without the fuss of a more particular ornamental birch.

Grow in full sun or partial shade, in any reasonably fertile, moist but well-drained soil — this variety is genuinely adaptable, tolerating chalk, clay, loam and sand alike. It's fully hardy (RHS H7), copes with both exposed and sheltered sites, and needs only minimal pruning once established.
