Betula 'Edinburgh' — 12ltr Pot

Named after Edinburgh Botanical Gardens, Betula 'Edinburgh' is a relatively recent hybrid between the Chinese red birch and Himalayan birch, bred to combine the best qualities of both. Dark green, serrated foliage forms a neat, dense crown through spring and summer before turning a warm rusty-yellow in autumn, while the peeling bark starts out copper-brown when young and matures to a striking white to soft pink.

An upright, columnar tree with a relatively restrained spread, 'Edinburgh' is particularly well suited to smaller gardens, courtyards and urban settings where a full-sized birch would be too much — it copes well with drought once established and tolerates a wide range of soils, making it a genuinely low-fuss choice.

Grow in full sun or partial shade, in any reasonably fertile soil — this variety is tolerant of chalk, clay, loam and sand. It's fully hardy (RHS H7), copes with both exposed and sheltered sites, and needs only minimal pruning once established, best carried out between late summer and midwinter to avoid heavy sap "bleeding."
