Beaucarnea recurvata (Ponytail Palm / Elephant's Foot)

With its distinctive bulbous, water-storing trunk and a cascading tuft of long, gracefully arching leaves, Beaucarnea recurvata brings real sculptural presence to any room. Despite the common name, it isn't a true palm at all — that swollen caudex at the base is what gives it the "elephant's foot" look, and it's this water-storage trick that makes the plant so famously drought-tolerant and forgiving of the occasional missed watering.

A slow grower and wonderfully low-maintenance, it's ideally suited to a bright spot with plenty of light, though it will tolerate some lower-light positions indoors. Let the soil dry out well between waterings and use a free-draining compost — this is a plant that far prefers being underwatered to overwatered. As a houseplant it typically reaches up to around 2–3 metres over many years, staying well within bounds for most indoor spaces. It's non-toxic and pet-friendly, making it a safe choice for households with animals or children.
