Azalea (mollis) 'Satan'
Technically a Knap Hill hybrid azalea rather than a true Azalea mollis, though it's commonly sold under the "mollis" banner. Raised at the historic Waterer nurseries at Knap Hill, it holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit and is particularly mildew resistant. Wickedly dark red buds open in late May and early June to reveal large, funnel-shaped, deep orange-red flowers, one of the later-flowering azaleas, extending the display after earlier varieties have finished. The grey-green, oblong leaves add a further show in autumn, turning rich shades of red.
An upright, bushy deciduous shrub, 'Satan' reaches around 1.5–1.75m in height with a spread of up to 1.5m, best suited to a woodland setting, a mixed shrub border, or as a specimen in a courtyard garden. It's best in partial shade and a sheltered spot, though it will tolerate full sun in reliably moist, humus-rich soil. As its roots are fairly shallow, a generous spring mulch of ericaceous compost helps conserve moisture. All parts of the plant are harmful if eaten, so gloves are recommended when handling and pruning.
Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch.
