Azalea japonica 'Radja'

Azalea japonica 'Radja' produces such a profusion of bright, funnel-shaped flowers, in warm shades of orange-red to pinkish-red with a slightly darker throat, that the glossy, dark green foliage almost disappears from view during peak flowering between April and June. The petals have a lightly ruffled, silky texture, with long, prominent stamens at the centre of each bloom.

A dense, rounded, evergreen shrub, 'Radja' typically reaches around 60–80cm in height with a similar spread, making it a good fit for borders, rockeries, Japanese-style gardens, or containers on a patio or balcony. Hardy down to around -15°C, it prefers a shaded or partially shaded spot sheltered from cold winds, and needs humus-rich, acidic soil that stays reliably moist but well-drained. All parts of the plant are harmful if eaten, so gloves are recommended when handling and pruning.
