Azalea japonica 'Pleasant White'

Bred by American azalea breeder P.E. Girard, Azalea japonica 'Pleasant White' lives up to its name with icy-white, slightly ruffled, funnel-shaped flowers marked with pale green spots in the throat, produced in dense clusters in mid-to-late spring against a backdrop of glossy, dark green evergreen foliage. It's a heavy, reliable bloomer that flowers well year on year once established.

A dwarf, neat-growing variety, 'Pleasant White' reaches around 50–90cm in height with a similar spread, forming a dense, slightly spreading mound well suited to smaller gardens, mixed borders, containers, and patios. Fully hardy, it grows happily in full sun or partial shade, though some shelter from strong or cold winds is beneficial. As with all azaleas, it needs consistently moist but well-drained, acidic soil, so plant with ericaceous compost and feed with an ericaceous fertiliser through the growing season. All parts of the plant are harmful if eaten, so gloves are recommended when handling and pruning.
