Azalea japonica 'Moederkensdag'
An RHS Award of Garden Merit variety since 1993, Azalea japonica 'Moederkensdag', also known as Mother's Day, is a reliable, free-flowering evergreen shrub that puts on a generous display of large, funnel-shaped red flowers in April and May, contrasting beautifully against its dark green foliage. Compact and bushy in habit, it holds its leaves year-round, giving structure to beds and borders well beyond the flowering season.
A slow-growing variety, 'Moederkensdag' typically reaches around 50–80cm in height with a similar spread, making it a versatile choice for borders, group planting, underplanting beneath larger shrubs, or as a specimen in a container. It performs best in partial shade, where the flower colour tends to hold longer, though it will also tolerate a sunnier spot. Like all azaleas, it needs consistently moist, acidic soil, so plant with ericaceous compost and feed with an ericaceous fertiliser from March to October. All parts of the plant are harmful if eaten, so gloves are recommended when handling and pruning.
Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch.
