Azalea japonica 'Luzi'
Bred by German rhododendron specialist Gerhard Mittendorf and introduced in 1975, Azalea japonica 'Luzi' is a compact, evergreen shrub that forms a spreading, rounded mound wider than it is tall. In May and into June, it becomes smothered in a profusion of fragrant, star-shaped, pure white flowers, set off beautifully against small, dark green, pointed leaves.
A low-growing variety, 'Luzi' typically reaches around 60–80cm in height with a slightly greater spread of up to 90cm, making it an excellent choice for small gardens, low informal hedging, shaded borders, and woodland or Japanese-style planting. It thrives in partial shade, sheltered from cold, drying winds and harsh midday sun, in moist, acidic, well-drained soil, so plant with ericaceous compost and feed with an ericaceous fertiliser in spring. Late frosts can damage the flower buds, so a sheltered spot is worthwhile. All parts of the plant are harmful if eaten, so gloves are recommended when handling and pruning.
Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch.
