Azalea japonica 'Königstein'

Named after the fortress town in Saxony, Germany, where it was bred at the Pillnitz castle gardens, Azalea japonica 'Königstein' produces a profusion of striking violet-purple flowers in mid-to-late spring, each with a darker blotch reminiscent of a rhododendron bloom. The display is so generous that the flowers can almost obscure the small, elliptic evergreen leaves, which deepen to a coppery-red tone through autumn and winter, adding colour to the shrub long after flowering ends.

A slow-growing, dense variety, 'Königstein' reaches around 50–75cm in height with a similar or slightly greater spread, making it well suited to containers, rock gardens, and the front of borders in smaller gardens. It's a reliably hardy, easy-to-grow azalea, thriving in moist but well-drained, ericaceous soil, and is happiest in dappled shade, though it will also tolerate full sun. As with other azaleas, all parts of the plant are harmful if eaten, so gloves are recommended when handling and pruning.

Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch.
