Azalea japonica 'Geisha Orange'
Bred by W. Arends as part of his celebrated Geisha series of evergreen azaleas, 'Geisha Orange' (registered name 'Satschiko') is a compact, RHS Award of Garden Merit shrub prized for its vivid orange-red, funnel-shaped flowers, which appear in such profusion during May and into June that they virtually cover the glossy, dark green foliage. Its low, mounded, spreading habit makes it a striking feature plant that punches well above its size.
A slow-growing, dwarf variety, 'Geisha Orange' typically reaches around 60cm in height and spread, making it ideal for rockeries, the front of borders, or containers on the patio, and a useful way to bridge the gap between spring bulbs and summer perennials. Fully hardy down to -20°C, it thrives in moist but well-drained, acidic soil in either full sun or partial shade, though some shelter from cold, drying winds is beneficial. Plant shallowly, as the roots are naturally short, and mulch with ericaceous compost to help retain moisture. All parts of the plant are harmful if eaten, so gloves are recommended when handling and pruning.
