Azalea japonica 'Amoena'
One of the oldest azalea varieties still in cultivation, Azalea japonica 'Amoena' produces an abundance of small, funnel-shaped flowers in a striking magenta to reddish-purple, an attractive and historic colouring that appears in dense clusters during late spring. The dense, glossy, oval evergreen leaves give the shrub year-round structure and interest, even once the flowers have faded.
A compact, densely branched, spreading shrub, 'Amoena' typically reaches around 60–80cm in both height and spread, making it well suited to ground cover, low borders, edging, or containers on a patio. It's a fully hardy, low-maintenance variety, growing well in partial shade to full sun, and needs consistently moist, acidic, well-drained soil, so plant with ericaceous compost and mulch annually. All parts of the plant are harmful if eaten, so gloves are recommended when handling and pruning.
Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch.
