Anemone × hybrida 'Serenade'
Bring the garden gracefully into autumn with Anemone × hybrida 'Serenade', a Japanese anemone whose semi-double, deep lavender-pink flowers dance on wiry stems from late summer right through to late autumn, each bloom centred with a golden boss of stamens. Below, the clump-forming foliage of dark green, deeply lobed leaves provides a handsome backdrop from spring onwards, making this a plant that earns its place in the border long before the flowers appear.
Reaching a height of 0.5–1m with a spread of 0.1–0.5m, 'Serenade' suits the middle to back of a mixed border, where its tall flower stems can sway above lower planting without shading it out. It thrives in full sun or partial shade and tolerates most soil types, including chalk, clay, loam and sand, provided drainage is reasonably good; like other Japanese anemones, it dislikes sitting in excessive winter wet. Once established it spreads steadily by rhizome, so allow it room to naturalise, or set it where its gentle spread is welcome. As with other anemones, the sap can be mildly irritating to skin, so gloves are sensible when dividing or deadheading.
