Agastache 'Black Adder'
A sensational architectural perennial that brings real drama to the summer border. From July through to October, tall, upright spikes of dark violet-purple to blue bottlebrush flowers emerge from near-black buds, held on sturdy stems above neat, aromatic green foliage that releases a delightful liquorice-like scent when brushed against. It's an outstanding magnet for bees and butterflies, flowering reliably later in the season when many other perennials are fading.
Fully hardy and drought-tolerant once established, 'Black Adder' reaches around 0.5–1m in height with a more modest spread of 10–50cm, forming an upright, bushy clump rather than sprawling. It's best suited to full sun in sheltered, well-drained soil — good drainage is essential over winter, as it can struggle in cold, wet conditions. Ideal for prairie-style planting, gravel gardens, sunny borders and wildlife schemes, and lovely combined with ornamental grasses. Trim back in late autumn to reduce wind-rock, then cut flowered stems hard back in spring.
