Acer rufinerve (Grey Snake-bark Maple) (12L Pot)
Grown as much for its bark as its foliage, Acer rufinerve is a medium-sized deciduous tree valued for its striking green-and-white striped trunk and branches — a real feature of interest through the darker months once the leaves have fallen. The broadly oval, three-lobed leaves emerge fresh green in spring, accompanied by small yellow flowers held in upright racemes, before putting on a fine autumn display of yellow and red. This variety holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Named for the fine reddish hairs found on the leaf veins, this Japanese species makes a wonderful specimen or architectural feature in medium to large gardens, its snake-like bark providing genuine year-round appeal.
Best given a sheltered position out of strong winds, it grows well in moist, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, and tolerates chalk, clay, loam and sand alike. Given time it will reach an eventual height of 8–12m with a spread that can exceed 8m, making it a superb choice as a specimen tree where its striking bark and autumn colour can be fully appreciated.
Supplied as a well-established plant in a 12-litre pot, ready to plant out and establish quickly.
Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch.
