Acer rubrum 'Red Sunset' (syn. 'Franksred') — 12ltr Pot

Holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, Acer rubrum 'Red Sunset' is one of the most dependable red maples for a fiery autumn display. Its three-lobed leaves emerge with a red tinge in spring, mature to a glossy green with red stalks through summer, then turn a brilliant orange-red to crimson from early to late autumn — colouring branch by branch for a display that lasts for weeks. Upright clusters of small pinkish-red flowers appear on bare branches in spring, followed later by the characteristic winged, pink-tinged seed pods.

A vigorous, upright tree with upswept branches, 'Red Sunset' develops a rounded, symmetrical crown as it matures, making it an excellent specimen for larger gardens, lawns or open landscapes where its autumn colour can really stand out.

Grow in full sun or partial shade, in fertile, moisture-retentive soil that leans acid to neutral — it will grow in most reasonably deep soils but colours best where it isn't sitting on chalk. It's fully hardy (RHS H6) and best sited somewhere semi-sheltered from strong or salt-laden winds, needing only minimal pruning once established.
